The Importance of Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal treatment can prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease from affecting your smile and your general health. Periodontal disease must be treated, as it can spread and cause heart and lung complications. It can even lead to diabetes. Periodontal disease can also cause tooth loss and deterioration of the jaw bone.
What Is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who has been trained to deal specifically with gum health and the treatment of periodontal disease, including gingivitis. A periodontist is qualified to treat the various stages of gum disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis, periodontal disease, systemic periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis, chronic periodontitis, and necrotizing periodontal disease.
How Is Periodontal Disease Treated?
Periodontal disease can be treated in different ways depending on how advanced the condition is. Generally, the treatments fall into two categories. Nonsurgical treatments are typically reserved for milder cases of periodontitis. Nonsurgical treatment can include:
- Scaling – Scaling is the process of removing bacterial plaque from the teeth, gums, and under the gum line. It can be performed with a specialized laser or ultrasonic device.
- Root Planing – Periodontal disease can create holes in your teeth which can harbor bacteria. These holes must be planed, or smoothed out, to prevent the possibility of further infection.
- Antibiotic Treatment – Periodontal disease is ultimately an infection. Once your treatment at the dental office is complete, your dentist will prescribe a round of antibiotics so your body can fight off the infection.
Advanced cases may require surgical treatments, like bone grafts, soft tissue grafts, flap surgery (also known as pocket reduction surgery), guided tissue regeneration, and tissue stimulation.
